Ivory Water Pot with
Melon Decor
Ch'ing Dynasty (A.D. 1644-
1911)
Height 5.5cm
Length 6.8cm
This ivory carving
takes the form of a long
melon whose exterior is
carved in relief with melon
tendrils, butterflies and
insects. Being hollow
inside, the melon can
contain water. The cover
is made in the shape of a
leaf with insects perched
on it. When the cover is
closed it becomes a carving
completely in the round.
